The Latinos in Agriculture Organization (http://latinosinagriculture.org) has created an opportunity for students to attend the upcoming conference by applying for a “student scholarship” to help them cover the cost of the conference registration, meals associated with the conference, and hotel accommodations (based on double occupancy).
The Latinos in Agriculture Leaders Conference provides a unique venue for sharing information and ideas for the best and most promising practices in outreach to Hispanics for Agriculture. The objective of the conference is to facilitate the opportunity for industry, government, education, and future leaders (students) to meet and discuss the transformation of the Latino Agricultural workforce of the future. The 5th Annual Latinos in Agriculture Leaders Conference will continue to engage stakeholders in capitalizing on the opportunities not yet fully explored with the Latino community in Agriculture and related fields.
The conference goals are to:
• explore best practices in recruiting Latino/Hispanic talent in agriculture and related fields;
• seek opportunities to partner with other stakeholders to build synergy and scalability in their programs;
• learn information about the diverse Latino/Hispanic culture in the United States and how to reach them;
• learn how to tap into this emerging and growing market and the opportunities it represents to the future of Agriculture;
• promote and expand partnerships and strategic alliances for collaboration between government, institutions, and the public/private Agricultural sector;
• foster and identify Hispanic undergraduate and graduate future leaders (students) who may be interested in your organization;
• promote greater Hispanic participation in Agriculture and related fields; and discuss emerging trends in higher education affecting Hispanics.
The deadline for students to apply is Friday, September 18, 2015. Any assistance you can provide in letting students know about this great professional development opportunity will be greatly appreciated.
The conference in will be at Courtyard & TownePlace Suites by Marriott DFW Airport North in Grapevine, TX.

2 Credit Community Service and Science Mentoring Course
Help 6th Grade Students with Science Fair Projects! Get involved with a class that makes a difference...
ALS 4932: Mentoring the Scientific Process
We are looking for 20 undergraduates with a science background (1 year of chemistry and biology) who are interested in motivating, mentoring, and helping underserved 6th graders with their science fair project over the fall of 2015. A commitment of a minimum of 20 hours of community service learning in addition to the 2-credit course is required. You would be required to attend all classes throughout the semester on Wednesdays from 4:20 until 6 p.m. Classes are held at Westwood Middle School. Undergraduates participating in the program must have their own transportation to the middle school.
This is the 12th year that students at UF have partnered with Westwood Middle School. Data from our program show that the amount of time and number of visits the undergrads made to the middle school made the biggest impact on how well the 6th graders did in science class and on their science fair judging scores. The 6th grader's FCAT reading and writing scores, GPA, gender, and race were not significant contributors. This means that YOU have the power to make a 6th grader successful, if you make the commitment to help.
The course, which will guide you through the research process and help you develop mentoring skills, is attendance based, so it is imperative that you attend every class. If you are interested in participating in this program (for 2 credits), please email Dr. Henken at henken@ufl.edu.

Patexia-Applied Research Opportunities for Engineering Students
What we do…
Patexia is a Los Angeles-based startup that uses crowdsourcing to solve engineering and
innovation challenges for some of the largest technology companies and research-oriented
organizations in the world. We were recently awarded a contract through the NASA
Tournament Lab and we are looking for talented undergraduate and graduate engineering
students to join our network as problem solvers and campus ambassadors.
Applied research opportunities…
Technical Problem Solver
The strength of Patexia’s crowdsourcing model comes from the global community of over
10,000 technical problem solvers and subject matter experts behind it. By joining our
professional network as a student member you will have the chance to interface with top
companies and research organizations in your field as you develop innovative solutions to
real world challenges. Throughout the process you will be collaborating with classmates,
professors, and experts from around the globe as you compete against teams from other US
and international universities for bragging rights and cash prizes.
Campus Ambassador
As a bridge between industry-driven problems and university-based solutions, we need to
work with the very best in order to exceed the expectations of clients such as NASA and
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The Patexia campus ambassador program is built around
well-connected engineering students who can not only help us solve technical problems, but
can share their experience with classmates, friends, and professors to help expand our reach.
Campus ambassadors will regularly meet and train with the Patexia team and, in addition to
compensation for meeting defined recruitment goals, ambassadors will be invited to relevant
networking events and be given the opportunity to directly connect with important industry
contacts.
