HCPC Compliance Package of the Year Student Design Competition

The HCPC's Compliance Package of the Year competition has recognized the most innovative pharmaceutical packages designed to improve patient adherence since 1995. In 2015, the organization’s 25th anniversary, the HCPC is launching a corresponding student competition to recognize innovative pharmaceutical packaging designs from undergraduate or graduate students of pharmaceutical and/or packaging schools that assists patients in taking their medication as prescribed.

To participate in the competition, the pharmaceutical package design must:

1) be in a compliance-prompting format with at least one patient adherence enhancing feature
2) not require pharmaceutical to be "re-packaged" by patients
3) be in a child-resistant format, if intended for home use, per Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) guidelines
4) practical to manufacture with industry available technology or readily adaptable technology
5) be U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CPSC compliant

For pharmaceutical packaging industry examples, the HCPC recommends that students visit the HCPC website, www.hcpconline.org and visit the Compliance Packaging Catalogue and previous HCPC Compliance Package of the Year winner announcement pages.

For complete information and guidelines, contact Robin Snyder or Jim Leary.

Professional development seminar 9/20 "Engineering Futures"

A free professional development workshop will be held on September 20, 2015 from 1pm-5pm (appx. end time) and is open to all students! The program, termed "Engineering Futures," was founded more than 20 years ago in response to a need to provide engineering students training in the "soft skills," those non-technical skills necessary for success in the workplace but rarely included in engineering curricula.

In this program, Tau Beta Pi brings in established and certified professionals to facilitate the workshops. Four of the five modules are the same as those purchased by companies across the nation to train their employees. UF's chapter holds five different sessions during the calendar year. If a student completes all five workshops, he or she  receives a certificate of completion, a distinguishable mark on a resume and in practice.

The September workshop is titled "People Skills" and the aim is to equip students with the skills needed to interact with different people and mediate conflicts.

As always, lunch will be provided! Location: NPB 1220. Please RSVP at the following link: http://uftbp.com/page.php?p=eventRSVP

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Celeste Rousseau at celesseau@ufl.edu

UF ABE Alumna Crowdfunding a Solution for Clean Drinking Water

Erica Wallace Gonzaga (B.S. in Biological Engineering, 2011) is seeking to tackle a major humanitarian problem: the lack of access to clean drinking water. Every day nearly 2,000 children die from waterborne illnesses due to lack of clean water and proper sanitation1. One in nine people lack access to a clean water source2, mostly in developing countries. Erica founded aqUV in 2014 with two other Gator Engineers, Daniel Blood (Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, 2014) and Rob Damitz (Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, 2015) to address this global issue. Their mission is to provide clean drinking water across the globe with simple and sustainable solutions.

The trio first conceived their solution for clean water in a University of Florida classroom. The aqUV water purification system uses ultraviolet light treatment to kill over 99.99% of bacteria and over 99.9% of viruses in 3 to 5 minutes. aqUV purifiers can be powered entirely by sunlight/solar energy eliminating the need for grid power or replacement batteries. The purifiers are also reusable eliminating the need for expensive replacement parts or filters.

aqUV is now launching a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to make their invention a reality. Their campaign launched September 14 and runs until October 28. Kickstarter is a popular crowdfunding platform where the internet community can pledge financial support to projects in exchange for “rewards” – incentives to be delivered upon meeting the project funding goals. aqUV is seeking to raise $50,000 to purchase equipment to manufacture aqUV purifiers. They are offering rewards ranging from the first production run of aqUV purifiers to stickers and t-‐shirts. Project backers can also choose to directly donate a purifier to someone in need.

 aqUV has pledged to donate one purifier to someone in need for every three purifiers ordered on Kickstarter. The first purifiers will be donated to aqUV’s partner organizations in Haiti. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and over 4 million Haitians lack clean drinking water.

Accessing clean water is a challenge in many regions around the world. aqUV is striving to provide thousands in need around the globe with a reliable and sustainable water purification method. Those interested in supporting the project or finding more information can visit the Kickstarter page or aqUV’s website www.aqUV.org.

Science Without Borders: Scholarships for Summer/Winter programs in Brazil

There is a great opportunity to participate in a scholarship program offered by IBS Americas in partnership with UNIP - Universidade Paulista, in São Paulo, Brazil. UNIP is a private university interested in receiving students from all over the world, conveniently located near Paulista Avenue, one of the safest areas of the city, heart of the Latin America financial district and home of the international community in São Paulo.

Aware of the difficulties young professionals and students face when traveling abroad to study, our International Business School – IBS Americas – offers scholarships covering up to 70% of the tuition fees together with a broad travel preparation.

There has never been a better time to visit Brazil, the world’s fifth-largest country - and not just because the World Cup was help there last year and the Summer Olympics in 2016. Thanks to the growing strength of the economy, and the improved infrastructure required for the events, the country is indeed safer and easier to travel around than ever before. However, have in mind the U.S. dollar (USD) is at its strongest level in years and now 35% stronger against the Brazilian currency (Real) than one year ago.

Our intensive program is integrally taught in English, covering topics such as:
• Strategy & Competitiveness;
• Strategic and marketing aspects of conquering markets in low incoming countries;
• Current Economic Scenario of Brazil and other emerging countries;
• Industrial and Consumer Markets;
• Foreign Trade and Direct Investment; and
• Logistics and structure.

Together with guest speakers and company visits, students will get an introduction and basic knowledge of how to do business in Brazil and other emerging markets. Programs are offered 3 times a year, as follows:

January: 2 weeks
July or August: 3 weeks

Students interested in to transferring credits will be evaluated final project presentation, final exam, class participation and class attendance. The final grade and the attendance rate will be available on the Transcripts Report.

All Sophomore and up or graduate students, regardless of grade point average, area of study, Portuguese Language background, citizenship or residency status are eligible and encouraged to apply.

This is a great opportunity to know Brazil, one of the newest economic powers in the world, opening up new academic and professional horizons for you. Our last groups were composed of students from more than 35 different countries.

How to participate? All interested candidates should contact my assistant, Mr. Julio Quadros, at julio.quadros@ibs-americas.com not later than October 4th of 2015, and you will be given an application form and all detailed information regarding the program.
