ABE Poster Symposium - October 23rd

The Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department is hosting a poster symposium for ABE graduate and undergraduate students to showcase their research, complete with free poster printing, judging, and PRIZE MONEY! The posters will be displayed throughout the first floor of Frazier Rogers Hall, and refreshments will be served.

KEY DATES:

October 9th – Submit intent to participate to Shannon Noble (shannon.noble@ufl.edu) with the following information included in the email:

  • Name
  • Degree being pursued (BS/MS/ME/PhD)
  • Faculty advisor
  • POSTER TITLE
Upon receiving your intent to submit a poster, you will receive additional information on how to receive reimbursement for the cost needed to print your poster and where to hang your poster on the day of the symposium. Students will be reimbursed a maximum of $12 for poster printing. Information on campus printing is available at http://print.at.ufl.edu/printingquestions.shtml

October 23rd – ABE Poster Symposium, 4 to 6 PM

PRIZES:

A group of faculty members will be judging posters. Advisors will not be judging their own students. Winners will be notified via email after the symposium, and will be presented with their awards at the ABE Thanksgiving Luncheon. Winning posters will also be showcased at the Thanksgiving Luncheon.

Sigma Xi Student Research Grants - Deadline October 15th

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society is now accepting student grant applications through the Grant-in-Aid of Research Program. Applications are accepted in all fields of science and engineering. The application deadline is October 15, 2013 for awards to be disbursed in January 2014.

This week, ICPF's Career Portal (http://careers.icpfbox.org) has a score or more of new “entry level” openings posted for new and upcoming graduates. They include about a dozen openings in corrugated sales, and the remainder in packaging design, graphic design, manufacturing management (trainees), supply chain management, customer service, and reliability management Directions on applying and general information on corrugated sales are outlined below.

Job Openings at Rock Garden

Rock Garden, part of the Coosemans Worldwide group, is a Farm to Fork entity that has continued to grow and expand. Aside from a substantial farming network both internationally and domestic, we have recently taken over 100 ac of certified organic land north of Lake Okeechobee to provide our customers with year round, Fresh from Florida products.

Current openings include a Production Manager and a Shift Supervisor. Both positions have responsibilities in Production Management, Staff Management, Technical Support and Food Safety.

The Production Manager spends 25% to 40% of time coordinating with other Departments such as Sales, Imports and Purchasing to insure the efficient movement of the products from the time that they are received, processed by Production employees and turned over to the Shipping Dept. The Production Manager spends approximately 60% to 75% overseeing that the proper application and metrics of quality, safety and health standards are maintained while in the process of handling, cleaning, maintaining, rotating and packing, driving efficiency and profitability without sacrificing quality workmanship or ethical standards.

The Shift Supervisor spends the majority of the time overseeing the quality, accuracy and quantity of the work performed by the personnel: (1) Production/Packing (2) Receiving/ Transportation Team Members. While training or occasionally doing actual production work he/she will be simultaneously supervising and overseeing the general operation of the employees supervised.

Engineering Specialist at SRWMD

Essential Functions:

• Coordinates the effective and efficient acquisition of water use monitoring data in support of agricultural water use monitoring and water resource planning, including equipment selection, installation, calibration, and maintenance.

• Coordinates the design and operation of databases needed in the acquisition of water use monitoring data.

• Supervises staff as necessary in the acquisition of water-related data.

• Plans, manages and performs other special projects or activities related to water resources monitoring with emphasis on water use monitoring.

• Prepares reports including recommendations, agreements, specifications, contracts and other related correspondences; makes presentations and updates key stakeholders as needed.

• Serves as a technical resource and liaison regarding data availability, quality and applicability to District engineers and modelers.

• Serves as a technical resource and liaison between other agencies, local governments, consultants and members of the public.

• Uses appropriate software, databases, modeling systems and other technology.

• Performs project management duties as needed, including preparation and evaluation of requests for bids; contract negotiations; contractor oversight, and cost tracking against budgeted funds.

• Understands and applies water-related laws, rules, and policies.

• Participates in and coordinates in other District activities and performs other duties as assigned.
