Field Intern Job Responsibilities:
Assists the Operations Manager by performing duties related to the management of field labor engaged in harvesting, packing and shipping watermelon from our farming operations in the Southeastern and Midwestern U.S. The interns hired for this position will gain an understanding of the crop estimation, crop health assessment, harvest, packing, shipping, and quality control processes of a watermelon farming operation.
Field Intern Job Duties:
• Perform field counts to estimate crop yield. Monitor fields for presence/progression of plant disease, assess plant and fruit health, monitor fruit quality.
• Monitor field labor for quality assurance. Monitor packing shed labor for quality assurance. Perform quality control tests on final product (watermelon).
• Duties to be performed are not physically demanding, but will be performed outdoors in watermelon fields and open packing facilities in summer months, so applicants should be comfortable working outdoors in a farm environment.
Requirements:
• Applicants should be either students or recent graduates of a four-year college or university; agriculture majors preferred.
• Recent graduates, or applicants entering their final year of study, seeking employment in the agriculture industry, are preferred
• Applicants should be prepared to work on location at one or more of our farms in FL, GA, or IN. Applicants may elect to work at as few as one farm for a period of as short as one month, but preference will be given to applicants willing to work in two or more locations for the duration of their summer break period.
• Interns will use their personal vehicles for transportation, temporary housing will be provided.
Additional Details
• Internships pay $500 per week. Workweek is 40 hours/week, may include weekends and/or nights. Internship period to be within the student’s 2021 summer break, start and end dates are flexible.
• Personal vehicles will be used for transportation; vehicle allowance will be provided.
• Interns will be provided with temporary housing near each farm location.
