Northwestern University Materials Research Undergraduate Experience - Summer 2017

2017 Regenerative Medicine Summer Internship Opportunities

The SRF Summer Scholars Program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct biomedical research to combat diseases of aging, such as cancer and Parkinson’s Disease. Under the guidance of a scientific mentor, each Summer Scholar is responsible for his or her own research project in such areas as genetic engineering and stem cell research. The Summer Scholars Program emphasizes development of both laboratory and communication skills to develop well-rounded future scientists, healthcare professionals, and policy makers. Students participating in the program will hone their writing skills via periodic reports, which are designed to emulate text scientists commonly must produce. At the end of the summer, students will have the opportunity to put all of their newly developed communication skills into practice at a student symposium.

Paid positions are available at:
• Buck Institute for Research on Aging
• Harvard Stem Cell Institute
• Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute
• SRF Research Center
• The Scripps Research Institute
• University of Oxford
• Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine

The online application and a full descriptions of each research project can be found at www.sens.org/2017-summer-scholars. Applications will be accepted until 12 pm PST February 6, 2017.

Texas A&M Undergraduate Summer Research Program

Join us this coming summer to immerse yourself in academic research and learn about graduate school. The roughly 10-week program will run from May 30, 2017 until August 4, 2017.
Application Information
Anticipated Timeline
11/03/2016 - Application Opens
02/01/2017 - Application Deadline
03/01/2017 - Decision Notifications

The purpose of the USRG program is to involve outstanding students who have completed their sophomore year and are interested in learning about undergraduate research and graduate school. Participants will make contributions to ongoing faculty research and, more importantly, gain an appreciation for and an interest in research.
Funding

Each participant will receive a $5000 stipend paid out as a competitive scholarship in three disbursements.

Male recipients of this scholarship must provide the institution (via the USRG program upon starting the program) proof of meeting Selective Service registration requirements or being exempt per the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) Rule 21.2263.

The program will also:
  • provide tuition and fees for one credit hour of a required research course;
  • provide housing or a housing allowance;
  • and provide up to $400 for travel expenses for external participants
Housing
External (non-TAMU) participants are required to stay in the housing provided by the program (see below). Those who are from the Bryan/College Station area can be considered for an exemption from this policy and instead receive a housing allowance.
Internal Participants

Internal (TAMU) participants can choose to stay in the housing provided by the program (see below) or receive a housing allowance.

Program Housing - The Stack (tentative)

USRG housing for Summer 2016 will be at The Stack at Legacy Point (tentative). Within walking distance of campus, the Stack is a fully-furnished, privately-owned dorm. Please see the website for more information on the actual location and look of the housing. You will be suitemates with one (1) to three (3) person(s) in the USRG program and possibly other summer research programs. Housing is assigned randomly by the The Stack and USRG program unless otherwise notified. Please let the USRG program know as soon as possible if you have any needs such as accessible living or any special arrangements.

Research Topics and Faculty

Unlike other summer research programs (e.g. NSF REUs), the USRG program does not have specific research topics or professors. In general, most faculty members in the Texas A&M University College of Engineering are eligible to be mentors for the program. Similar to the graduate school search process, we suggest that you look online at the faculty listings/research pages on the respective department websites. Once you have identified faculty of interest to you, contact them to express interest in working with them through the USRG program and ask if they will be available during the summer to mentor you, should you be accepted.
