Buckhead Meat of Florida-Internship Program-Summer 2017

Overview: The Buckhead Meat of Florida internship program offers students the opportunity to work with one of Sysco’s leading specialty meat companies. The program will allow students to further develop their skills and broaden their industry knowledge through a variety of projects that will enhance their college education.

Required Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Animal Sciences, Agricultural Education and Communication, Food and Resource Economics, or related field
    1. Meat Science focus preferred
    2. Completion of sophomore year
  • Willingness to learn and work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Proactive and self-motivated
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership and decision-making skills
  • Experienced using Microsoft Office applications

NPFDA 2017-2018 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The NPFDA (National Poultry & Food Distributors Association) Scholarship Foundation is entering its 38th year of scholarship assistance. Every year, we award five $2,500.00 scholarships to students in the fields of poultry science, food science, agricultural economics/marketing, Food Marketing and related poultry and business fields of study.

Interested students may apply for the 2017-2018 academic year scholarships by completing the attached application and sending it along with a 1 page letter explaining their career goals. They will also need a letter of recommendation from a professor, department head, advisor or dean.

The application, and letter of recommendation must reach the NPFDA office no later than May 31, 2017. (Contact Robin Snyder for the application.)

Transcripts MUST arrive by June 10th. Materials may arrive separately. Selection and notification will be completed by July 15th.

Selection criteria for the scholarship will include, but not be limited to the following:

1. Students must be in their Junior or Senior (college) year when they receive the scholarship - therefore may be a sophomore or Junior when applying.
2. Consideration of academic excellence.
3. Applicants must be enrolled as a full time student in a U.S. University/College.
4. Past and current involvement in poultry, agriculture and food business related activities.
5. Professional objectives of the student.

UF Field and Fork Farm and Garden Internship

(0-3 credit options available; a limited number of work study/ paid positions are available)

The Field and Fork Farm and Garden Internship is an opportunity for a very broad spectrum of students to practice skills and ideas learned in classes and gain exposure to new skills and ideas.  This internship is for any student who wants to better understand where food comes from, how to grow it sustainably, and how to work as a team to achieve our goals.

Internship description
Field and Fork Interns will work with the farm and garden managers to do a wide spectrum of tasks that are integral to starting and running a working farm and maintaining a large, existing garden.

Interns completing 2 or more credits can focus approximately 25% of their time on an independent project. Projects will change seasonally and can be tailored to each intern’s learning goals and the current needs of the Field and Fork Program. Interns can choose any of the example projects listed below or propose a project that is not listed. 

a. Outreach, Education and Extension
  1. Ex: Work in the urban agriculture demonstration area
  2. Ex: Create educational signage for the farm and garden
  3. Ex: Create a weed, pest, and disease guide for the farm and garden
b. Natural Resource Management
  1. Ex: Plan and implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices such as scouting and identifying the beneficial and harmful insects
  2. Ex: Experiment using different types of mulching systems to minimize irrigation needs and soil temperature fluctuations
c. Marketing and Communication
  1. Ex: Work with food pantries and soup kitchens to better understand what they want and need and making sure that it aligns with farm-realities
  2. Ex: Create marketing information for the pantries about Field and Fork, healthy eating, and cooking ideas.
d. Planning and Business Management
  1. Ex: Practice the skill of doing crop enterprise budgets
  2. Ex: Create crop rotation plan(s) for the farm
e. Research
  1. Ex: Conduct breeding trials to test for productivity, heat tolerance, or flavor
  2. Ex: Design and conduct experiment on issues relating to farming systems, such as water, soil and nutrients, plant/pest interactions, etc.
Summer Internship Requirements and Details
  • Most internship positions during the summer of 2017 are physical, field-based positions. Work will typically be hot and dirty and will frequently require heavy lifting. We work outside in the rain and heat.
  • A small number of internship positions are a combination of outdoor field work and indoor work that includes recordkeeping, website updating, developing educational programing for elementary through high school aged school groups, and managing volunteers.
  • All interns will work with volunteer and educational groups that visit the farm and garden during the summer.
  • Summer internships last 15 weeks: Monday, May 8th through August 18th.
  • Each intern will have a one week vacation.
  • Strong preference is given to interns who can work 20 hours/week or more.
  • Our work days run from 8:30am to 3pm with a 30-minute lunch break. Occasional work in evenings and weekends may be required to accommodate volunteer groups.

NEBRASKA | Undergraduate Summer Research Opportunities for Students- Deadline 3/1

The program offers students an excellent opportunity to hone research skills and to experience life as a graduate student. Students will enhance their academic resume, work closely with faculty and peers, and have fun with social and professional development activities, all while receiving numerous benefits. Students historically underrepresented in graduate education are especially encouraged to apply. Due to funding restrictions, participation is limited to U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents (those holding a green card.)

All programs for 2016 are listed at unl.edu/summerprogram and include projects in Biochemistry, Plant Science/Pathology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Microbiology, Mechanical Engineering, Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Optics and Laser Physics, Psychology, Redox Biology, Sociology, and Virology.

Our online application makes it easy for students to apply for up to three different research groups. Priority review of applications begins Monday, February 1 and all applications are due by Monday, March 1.

Leadership Development Retreat Applications Open

LeadUF is a foundational leadership retreat where students will learn about, reflect on and develop their personal leadership framework. LeadUF is based on the understanding that leadership is a life-long journey developed by our experiences and engagement in the community and world.

The weekend incorporates large group activities, small group discussions, reflection, outdoor experiences, time to connect with other leaders and lots of FUN in a beautiful location. LeadUF is designed to accommodate different learning styles during the overnight, off-campus retreat to provide participants with skills to make positive change.

The GREEN Program invites you to join us in the remote volcano archipelago of Hawai’i this June. HawaiÊ»i’s sequestered location is a fascinating case study for agriculture and energy independence as it’s own microcosm of the world home to its unique Polynesian culture. As an island-state that imports 90% of their food an! d exports 80% of their agricultural production, combined with increased efforts of farming infrastructure and technology, the state of Hawai’i is on the mission towards food and energy security.

In conjunction with our 2017 Hawai'i Pilot Program, we will be partnering with the 2017 World Youth Congress. GREEN Hawai'i students will be delegates at the Congress and represent the next generation of sustainability leadership.

Virginia Tech REU-Interdisciplinary Water Science and Engineering

Application Deadline March 17, 2017 (5:00 PM, EST)

Applications are invited from qualified and motivated undergraduate students (rising sophomores, juniors and seniors) from all U.S. colleges/universities to participate in a 10-week (May 21-July 28, 2017) summer research in interdisciplinary water science and engineering at Virginia Tech. U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents are eligible to apply. The research program is funded through the National Science Foundation – Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF REU) program. The 10-week internship will begin on May 21, 2017 (arrival day) at Virginia Tech and end on July 29, 2017 (departure day). The research internship includes a stipend of $500/week, housing (two persons per room), meals, and travel expenses*.

Ten students will be recruited for this program and two of them will travel to India for research. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) is the host institution in India.
