Park Maintenance Worker position-Gainesville

The City of Gainesville is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual for a Parks Maintenance Worker III who will be working in the Park Operations Division of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department. A typical day may include servicing city athletic fields such as baseball, softball, soccer and track fields. The work involves performing mowing, cultural care such as aeration, fertilization, weed and pest management and inspections of city fields to make them look great. You will also work in other city parks taking care of general grounds maintenance needs such as litter pick up, repair of play equipment, landscape needs and other park tasks as assigned.

Mathematics and art have a long historical relationship. People have been trying to understand abstract structures and find artistic interpretation of data for years. The computation power of modern computers makes it possible to visualize them and even create more amazing mathematical and algorithmic art pieces.

You don't need any programming background for this course – only basic algebra, geometry and a lot of creative thinking. This is an entry-level programming course for anyone who is interested in math, art and curious about computing. This course will introduce interesting art and music examples and present their artistic elegance from a mathematical perspective. Further, you will learn how to translate ideas (i.e. mathematical models) into programming codes to create generative art work using computers. Topics include Pointillism, camera model, Golden ratio, Fibonacci number in art, tessellation, Asymmetric pattern, Kaleidoscope and image manipulation, Fractal etc.

Sustainable Water Management Research Unit at the Alluvial Aquifer Water Research Center

A new water research center is being developed by the Agricultural Research Service (USDA) in cooperation with Mississippi State University Delta Research and Extension Center (MSU-DREC) in Stoneville, MS. The new Alluvial Aquifer Water Research Center will be staffed by at least four MSU scientists and seven ARS scientists. This interdisciplinary group will address regional agricultural concerns and are strongly supported by active stakeholder groups including the Delta Council.

To fill its research cadre ARS plans to soon recruit the following positions, with one of the listed discipline below serving as the research leader of the ARS unit at the Alluvial Aquifer Water Research Center:

• Agricultural Engineer: Surface water and surface to groundwater interactions
• Plant Physiologist: Plant/crop water relations and sensing of water and soil fertility stress at the field and management zone scale.
• Soil Scientist: Specialized expertise in soil physics to assess management impacts on soil physical processes and soil-water relationships.

Global Culture Photo Competition Announcement

The University of Florida International Center (UFIC) invites students, faculty, staff and alumni to enter its annual international photography contest. Judges will look at technical merit, composition, and that the photo conveys a "Global Culture" message. Submission period opens August 13, 2018. All entries must be received electronically by no later than October 5, 2018 at 12 midnight. Awards: Judges will award a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each of three categories. 1st prize winners will each receive $100, 2nd prize winners will receive $50, 3rd prize winners will receive $25.
