to study the effects of nutrient and water management in organic mixed vegetable production
systems. This OPS position will be split between the Sustainable Nutrient Management Systems
Lab (Dr. Maltais-Landry) in the Soil and Water Sciences Department and the Urban Water
Resources lab (Dr. Eban Bean) in the Agricultural & Biological Engineering Department.
This position will combine field research conducted at the UF Plant Science Research and
Education Unit (Citra) with field trials conducted on growers’ fields located in Alachua County.
This work will mainly focus on carbon and nutrient cycling in crops and soils, soil health, and
water management. The OPS will work in close collaboration with a postdoctoral research
associate and assist with field and lab work, in addition to data compilation and analysis.
Responsibilities:
• Assist with the implementation of field experiments at Citra and on growers’ fields;
• Conduct sample collection for soil, crop and water;
• Process experimental samples in the laboratory;
• Collect data and maintain field equipment;
• Compile data prior to interpretation and analysis.
Minimum qualifications:
• BS in biology, soil science, agricultural sciences (e.g., Agronomy, Horticulture) or related
engineering field (e.g., Agricultural, Biological, Ecological) at the beginning of employment;
• Prior experience in field and/or lab work in soil, crop and/or water sciences;
• Capacity to compile data using Microsoft Excel;
• Punctuality, attention to detail and capacity to work in hot and humid conditions;
• Must have a valid US driver’s license;
• Availability to work from May 2021 to December 2021.
Preferred qualifications: Prior experience in both field and lab work; capacity to conduct
preliminary data analysis in R; availability to work in this position until December 2022.
Advertised salary: $13/h to $15/h depending on experience
