Drop Deadline Approaching - November 24th!
Reminder: Nov. 24 is the Last Day to Drop/Withdraw. Take action now!
Undergraduate students planning to drop a course for Fall 2014 must do so by 5 p.m. on Nov. 24 and are encouraged to take action as soon as possible. To drop a course, see your academic adviser. If you have ‘free’ drops remaining, you will complete the paperwork with your adviser and the drop will be processed by your program. You do not need to come to the Dean’s Office to complete a free drop.
If you are dropping a course and do not have free drops remaining, you will have to petition for an additional drop. You must be able to document extenuating circumstances that interfered with your ability to complete the course you wish to drop.
Engineering students must meet with their departmental advisors first. The advisor must agree to provide a memo on department letterhead (or college petition form) supporting the request. The student must complete the College Petition form and take it with the department memo to 204 Weil Hall for approval.
CALS students must also complete the petition paperwork (available from your adviser or in 2002 McCarty Hall D) and return it to the Dean’s Office (2002 McCarty Hall D) by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 24. This paperwork requires signatures from your adviser and the instructor of the course. You will also need to call 352-392-1963 to make an appointment to see Associate Dean Wysocki for review of your petition.
If you need to withdraw from the semester, it’s also important to speak to your adviser to discuss the impact of withdrawing from all your courses on your academic progress. To read about the withdrawal policies, click on “Withdraw” in ISIS. The process must be completed by 5 p.m. on Nov. 24.

2015 NNIN REU
During the summer of 2015, the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network will host its final Research Experience for Undergraduates (NNIN REU) Program from June through August. Engineering and science students with broad interests across disciplines focusing on nanotechnology are eligible to apply (see restrictions and eligibility requirements below).
The chosen undergraduates taking part in this ten-week program will receive hands-on nanoscience and technology experience through research, with applications to bio-engineering, chemistry, electronics, materials science, optics, optoelectronics, physics, and the life sciences. The research projects are designed and supervised by the faculty and technical staff at the participating NNIN research facilities. Interns then work with faculty and graduate students on projects, using the unique resources offered at their award site. A scientific convocation, attended by all NNIN REU interns, is held in August to allow interns the opportunity to present their work to their peers in a concise scientific presentation. Interns also must complete a written report, akin to a research paper, summarizing the findings of their research project. These reports are published as the NNIN REU Research Accomplishments and distributed to the interns and sites, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and many others.
Participants receive a $5,000 stipend, plus housing and all reasonable travel expenses to their research site and the convocation site. They may be responsible for their own meals. Full participation in the site program, network convocation and final reporting is mandatory.
Again, the full and complete program information -- including restrictions and deadlines, and a link to the online application -- is at http://www.nnin.org/reu

Spring Course SWS 2008 - Land and Life: The Challenge of Human Existence - Web-Based
This 3 credit web-based course will be taught by Dr. Teri Balser.
The class will be a general education exploration of human use of terrestrial resources across time - from past to present, and into the future. We will address how use of soil and land resources changes as human societies develop (hunter gatherer, agrarian, industrial, knowledge-based), and investigate the modern threats and opportunities for our major terrestrial resources (soil, mineral, and biological) around the world. We will consider current issues such as the impact of climate change and the growing global population on our existence. Finally we will discuss the feasibility and possibilities of various solutions to resource depletion - for example GMOs, terraforming Mars, biofuels, and intensification of land use. Students will leave the course better able to discuss constraints and trade-offs associated with social development, and the basis for many of our current natural resource crises. They will be able to describe and evaluate various solutions for addressing the long-term sustainability of human existence and terrestrial resource use.
