CALTECH SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES


Caltech is excited to announce two summer research opportunities available to continuing undergraduate students. Questions about these programs can be directed to Carol Casey at casey@caltech.edu or (626) 395-2887.

 MURF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

 The MURF program aims to increase the participation of underrepresented students (such as African American, Hispanic, and Native American, females who are underrepresented in their discipline, or first-generation college  students) in science and engineering Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. programs and to make Caltech's programs more visible to students not traditionally exposed to Caltech.

 Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through non-graduating seniors and must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.

 Competitive applicants will have completed sophomore-level courses in desired research field, have demonstrated through academic and/or co-curricular activities a passion for research, and can articulate how their research interests align with Caltech's research areas. The most competitive applicants will have had prior research experience.

 Support: MURF students will receive a $6000 award for the ten-week program.

An additional $500 housing and travel supplement will be provided.

 AMGEN SCHOLARS PROGRAM

 Caltech's Amgen Scholars Program is geared towards students in biology, chemistry, and biotechnology fields. Some of these fields include biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, and chemistry.

 Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through non-graduating seniors, must be attending a four-year university, and must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.

 Support: Amgen Scholars will receive a $5500 award, round-trip air transportation, a generous housing allowance, and a food allowance.

One Heart Source is currently accepting applications for our 2013 Volunteer Programs in sub-Saharan Africa.

Teaching Lab Grants Available for Students


In December 2012, UF's Natural Area Advisory Committee (NAAC) will award up to two minigrants of $500 each to fund 2013 projects that enhance the information infrastructure of The Natural Area Teaching Laboratory (NATL). This is a great opportunity for professional development, as participants have the chance to practice the grant writing process. The NAAC seeks projects that will produce useful new information about NATL or will improve access to what is already known. To be eligible one must be a UF student, or groups of students with a designated student leader and a faculty sponsor. The application deadline is November 30th, 2012. Please note that this in not an official UF site and may not show you which sections remain open or additional sections that are added. College of Engineering Scholarships - Deadline 12/7


The 2013-2014 College of Engineering Undergraduate Scholarship Program is accepting applications.  You will find the scholarship application at the following web site:  http://www.eng.ufl.edu/scholarships 

Once you have completed your application, please contact your departmental coordinator or advisor as soon as possible to learn how to schedule an interview, which is the second phase of the scholarship process.  I will send out specific information about how each department will conduct interviews at the end of this week.  

You will need your Gatorlink ID and password to enter into the system.  If you submitted your application and remembered something you wanted to add or change afterwards, know that your departmental undergraduate coordinator/advisor can edit this information during your interview.

Before you begin, please read answers to frequently asked questions about the COE undergraduate scholarships that are included below.  I encourage you to save this email for future reference.  

Last year, the College of Engineering distributed over $170,000 in scholarship funds to applicants.  The application is very straightforward so no good excuse exists for you to not apply to this program to give it a chance!

Paid Internship with Seldom Rest, Inc.

A paid internship opportunity which may lead to full-time job is available for Spring or Summer semesters.  The internship is with Seldom Rest, Inc. – a large farming enterprise in southwest Georgia and northwest Florida.  The internship will involve helping the farm manager develop a wireless method to record data from flow meters installed on pivot pumps and generally assist with irrigation management.

Academic Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship


The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) is again offering its Academic Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship thanks to the sponsorship of BASF Corporation.

Five (5) one thousand dollar ($1,000) scholarships are available to students entering at least their second undergraduate year (or any year of graduate school) pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in an agricultural, agribusiness, or an ag vocation field.

Applicants or a parent/guardian must be a member of the NCGA.  Funds are for the 2013-2014 school year.  Past scholarship winners and employees and the families of employees of any division of BASF or their subsidiaries or the NCGA are not eligible for the scholarship.

Applications must be postmarked on or before December 7, 2012.

Linguistics Study needs volunteers. Free pizza!


A first year graduate student in the Linguistics Department is doing a study on speech perceptions and is in need of participants. She is hoping to get a diverse group of students from all areas of the UF student body between October 29th-November 9th.
 
The study will only take an hour of the participants time, and you will all remain anonymous. All students have to do is listen to recordings and state which personality traits they were able to perceive while listening. She will be providing free pizza as compensation for your time.

Study Abroad Costa Rica-December


Announcing a unique winter-break opportunity for Biosystems Engineering students interested in ecological engineering.   Supported by the Michigan State University and University of Costa Rica Biosystems Engineering Department, the 4-credit study abroad program will run December 15-29, 2012.    

 The program goal is to study the engineering design, performance, installation and long term carbon and water footprints for biomass energy installations in a tropical environment.

Students will use ecosystems engineering to analyze sustainability of anthropogenic systems to produce water, energy, and food.  An existing MSU/University of Costa Rica (UCR) bioenergy demonstration site and the National Electric Company (ICE) production sites will be used for academic activities.

MSU engineering students in partnership with peer colleagues from the UCR Biosystems Engineering department through expert lectures, industrial site visits and the MSU/UCR demonstration project design and evaluation will learn how to answer these types of engineering questions:

New Study Lab in CALS

A new student study lab has just opened for students in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS). It is located in McCarty B, Room 3086. The new lab increases the number of available computers and provides improved technology and a separate study space for students.

KSU Research Position


Title: Research Technician in Biological and Agricultural Engineering,

Full-time, twelve months, (non tenure track position)

Position Responsibilities: Provide oversight and management of the Biological and Agricultural

Engineering teaching, research, and fabrication laboratories. The successful candidate must be willing to assist with applied field research projects and student design teams requiring overnight travel. Additional responsibilities include the following:

· Ability to develop, foster and implement safety programs for all BAE laboratories
· Ability to communicate with diverse clientele (faculty and students)
· Ability to assist undergraduate and graduate students with research / design projects
· Ability to manage inventories in BAE research fabrication area and BAE vehicle fleet
· Ability to manage undergraduate labor
The successful candidate must be willing to serve as co-team advisor to at least one BAE student design competitive teams and provide assistance to the other competitive teams or undergraduate senior design projects.
