Undergraduate Summer Research Program in Computational Biology

We are pleased to announce the 12th summer for our REU program in computational biology and would hope that you would also be willing to recommend another student(s) for our program this year. B.I.G. Summer 2020 at UCLA - Final Deadline 3/1/20


This 8-week program (June 22 - August 14, 2020) combines workshops in big data analysis with research experiences in diverse areas of quantitative and computational biosciences. Supported by grants from NSF, NIH, and the University of California we can again provide up to 50 student fellowships and on-campus housing. Previous participants raved about the skills acquired, their research experience, the academic community and network. 

Criteria for admission are a passion for biological or biomedical research, some background in quantitative reasoning, math, stats or equivalent, and an interest to contribute to the diversity and inclusive climate of the UCLA academic research community.  Members of underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. We would also like to emphasize that students may bring their research projects and thus function as catalysts for collaborations between their primary research faculty (at their own institution) and specific UCLA faculty.

Mississippi State University's Undergraduate Apprenticeship Program

Greetings! Mississippi State University (MSU) is pleased to offer several undergraduate apprenticeship opportunities for qualified juniors and seniors through the MSU Extension Undergraduate Apprenticeship Program in 2020. Each apprenticeship offers an integrated research and outreach experience, in which the student will work directly with a faculty mentor to assist with ongoing research and help develop a related educational product or process that successfully translates that research into relevant outreach to key stakeholders.

Students will receive a $400/week stipend (for 10 weeks), plus job-related travel expenses. It is up to the student’s home institution whether the student will receive college credit for the summer semester.

Apply now! 2020 Pigs, Poultry, the Planet, and Data-Driven Problem Solving REEU

We are now accepting applications for the 2020 cohort of the "Pigs, Poultry, the Planet, and Data-Driven Problem Solving" (nicknamed "P4") Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduates summer program, which is funded through the USDA. P4 Fellows will be hosted in Raleigh, NC, by the NC State University Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering in conjunction with the NC State Prestage Department of Poultry Science and NC A&T Department of Animal Sciences. Undergraduate students will have the opportunity to learn/use data science and travel to China in this paid fellowship! Learn more here.

Applications are due January 15th! Only undergraduate students who will still be enrolled through summer 2020 are eligible to apply. All applicants must have prior background in statistics (e.g., completion of one or more statistics courses). More details on eligibility are included on the webpage.

NSF REU program - Aquatic Ecology - Auburn Univ - Summer 2020

We are excited to invite applications from undergraduate students to participate in a National Science Foundation supported summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program focused on the ecology of southeastern ponds, rivers, reservoirs, and estuaries. Ten undergraduate students will work closely with a team of Auburn University faculty to explore aquatic ecosystems, complete a student-driven research project, participate in a variety of professional development and social activities, develop and lead an outreach project, and share their research findings in a symposium at the conclusion of the program. Participants will work closely with our mentors to develop an interdisciplinary project involving complementary fields, such as community ecology, limnology, evolution, fisheries management, molecular biology, conservation, biogeochemistry, biodiversity, and microbiology. Environmental Engineering Solutions for Pollution Prevention (EESPP-REU)

Program Dates: May 29 to August 9, 2019 (10 weeks plus 3-day orientation)

Applications are being accepted for the summer 2019 Environmental Engineering Solutions for
Pollution Prevention REU at the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB).

EESPP-REU students receive one-on-one mentoring in the conduct of environmental research,
focused training in environmental and professional ethics, GRE training, and exposure to a variety
of research methods. The program includes weekly group meetings to share research progress, and
culminates with a symposium where students present research findings in oral and poster formats.
Additional funding is available for REU participants to attend national conferences to present their
research results. To network with faculty and peers, students attend fieldtrips throughout western
New York, Niagara Falls, and the lower Great Lakes region.

REU participants receive a $5,250 stipend and free on-campus housing in a LEED-certified student
complex. Participation is limited to U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and students must be
enrolled as undergraduates in a college program through Fall 2019 (graduating seniors are
ineligible). Eligible students interested in environmental/civil/chemical engineering, environmental
science, biology, chemistry, geology, or geography are encouraged to submit an online application.

Summer REEU Opportunity at Purdue on Data Science

This summer experiential research program, hosted at Purdue University, is designed to equip 5 cohorts with a total of 47 participants with data science skills that complement their agricultural discipline knowledge. We will enable students to contribute to the rapidly developing research and practice of digital agriculture in a student-centered, active-learning environment with a combined course/research experience.

The Program Objectives and Student Learning Goals are:
● understand application program interfaces (APIs) well enough to collect data and wrangle data into informed decisions
● perform proper statistical analysis and be able to communicate process and results
● understand the industry opportunities in agri-business data science

The project will address a variety of the AFRI farm bill priority areas with focus on Cyberinformatics and Tools for Food and Agricultural Data Analysis and Data-Driven Applications (FACT). With the intellectual focus on digital agriculture and data analytics, we will introduce algorithmic thinking in basic elements, and will empower students to integrate different concepts into their own research area and to communicate that effectively.

The culmination of the summer research experience will be a mini-symposium with student presentations (live and virtual) to internal and external stakeholders.

REU in Nanotechnology at Johns Hopkins

The Institute for NanoBioTechnology at Johns Hopkins University offers undergraduate students from colleges and universities around the country a chance to participate in research projects in the exciting and rapidly growing area of nanobiotechnology, a place where biology, medicine, and nanotech meet. Enjoy 10 weeks of research in the fields of nanotechnology for biology and bioengineering in a hands-on, graduate level laboratory.

Program Objectives: •To provide students with a greater understanding of the development and applications of nanotechnology for biology and bioengineering. •To give students a solid grounding in research methodologies in these areas. •To inspire students with a deeper appreciation for the contributions that improved technology in nanotechnology for biology and bioengineering can make to our lives. •To grant students with a truly unique educational experience, with research at the core, while at the same time serving as an ideal foundation for future graduate work.

Each student will enjoy the advantages of: •Hands-on, graduate-level laboratory research experience. •Guidance from faculty and graduate student mentors. •Development and refinement of important laboratory and communication skills. •Networking with experienced scientists. •Stipend, paid housing, and travel allowance to concentrate on research and other professional development skills.

ORNL Pathways to Computing Internship Program

The Pathways to Computing Internship Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a 10-week summer program that provides undergraduate students with research projects in computer science, computational science, and mathematics. Students will learn under the direction of ORNL research staff and will participate on projects in diverse domains including computer science, health data science, and climate science. Selected interns will have access to ORNL's leadership-class facilities, including Summit, the world's most powerful supercomputer.

ORNL's Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate oversees an immense store of computing power and its talented staff of computational scientists and mathematicians, conducting state-of-the-art research and development in computer and computational sciences in support of the Department of Energy's missions and programs.

Selections will be made on a rolling basis and continuing until applicants have been chosen. For best chance of selection, you must complete your application as soon as possible.

BENEFITS
$500 per week stipend
