Arden Home Owners Association - Farm Manager Job

Arden, an award winning master plan, agrihood community in western Palm Beach County, is seeking a dedicated, full-time farm manager to work alongside its two Farm Directors. This is a unique opportunity to be a leader in the agrihood community movement.

The Arden Farm grows organic vegetables for a 200 share CSA that will eventually become a 600 share CSA once all of the homes are built. The farmers also maintain a Childrens’ Garden, two You-Pick Gardens, a Butterfly Garden, a Community Garden, Orchard and General Store.

Working Relationships
Reports directly to Arden Farm Directors. Occasionally works closely with Community Manager, Arden Lifestyle Director and General Store Attendant. Responsibilities

● Support farm directors in all aspects of vegetable, fruit and herb production, including but not limited to seeding, planting, pest, disease and fertility management, field cultivation, irrigation planning, installation and repairs, harvesting and post harvest handling, record keeping, upholding product, food safety standards, etc.
● Manage CSA pick ups on-site in the Barn on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings from November to May
● Maintain farm infrastructure and landscape with support from contracted vendors, including the cleanliness and orderliness of the store, barn and its surroundings
● Prepare and maintain budgets, as well as supply ordering
● Lead workshops and presentations
● Provide tours of the General Store and Farm
● Provide friendly customer service both in person and by phone
● Support the General Store Attendant in maintaining a positive experience for customers while performing an array of vital functions that include produce handling, merchandising, stocking, cleaning/organizing, maintaining food permits and most importantly, customer service
● Practice and foster team spirit and positive productive working relations with HOA, Developer staff and resident volunteers
● Provide feedback to Management
● Reconcile and report resident issues and concerns
● Maintain dress code
● Complete assigned tasks, phone calls and research to assist farm directors
● Assist HOA team with workshops/events as needed

Required Qualifications and Skills

Qualified candidates must be able to work in various weather conditions, stand for extended periods of time, and are required to repeatedly lift and move up to 50 lbs. This position also requires occasional nights and weekend work.

● At least 3 years of organic vegetable production and farm management experience on a similar or larger scale
● Proven experience independently operating a tractor with various implements
● Excellent work ethic and time management skills
● Strong interpersonal communication skills
● Demonstrated attention to details, experience building efficient systems and record keeping
● Carpentry skills, general “fix it” know how, and is familiar with basic tools
● Enthusiasm for local and sustainable agriculture
● Experience working in a team environment with proven leadership skills
● Timely and dependable
● Able to use retail technology and CSA logistics platform
● A problem solver with a focus on continuous improvement, who is always learning, open to feedback and takes action as required

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

● College Degree in Organic Crop Production, or related field
● Experience growing and managing production for 3+ seasons in a tropical/subtropical climate
● Proven experience writing and maintaining food safety plans and procedures
● Knowledge of tropical fruit production
● Bilingual English/Spanish

EG student wanted to automatize phenotyping stations

The UF Blueberry Breeding and Genomics Lab (https://www.blueberrybreeding.com/) is looking for an undergrad to automate different phenotyping stations. The successful candidate student will assemble automated photographic stations to take pictures and process data of blueberry samples. The candidate must have hands-on experience with Raspberry Pi and/or Arduino systems, be independent, self-motivated, and willing to work in a multidisciplinary environment. There is the possibility of publication and software authorship. No prior experience with plants or biology is needed. It is a paid position after a short experience period. This project will give students the opportunity to work in a diverse environment and, also, to sharpen their knowledge in robotics and programming. Research Assistant Position – Range Cattle REC in Ona, FL

The Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network is a partnership among 18 agroecosystems across the United States that addresses the great and complex issues facing US food, feed, fuel, and fiber production (LTAR https://ltar.nal.usda.gov).

University of Florida, Range Cattle Research Center and its partner Archbold Biological Station (Archbold-UF Range Cattle Subtropical) LTAR sites are focused primarily on productivity and sustainability of forage-based grazing systems in subtropical environments with special emphasis on the impacts of grazing land management on ecosystem services under a climate change scenario.

University of Florida, Range Cattle Research Center is accepting applications for a research assistant position based at the UF RCREC site in Ona, FL. The position will be renewable contingent upon continued funding and the expectation is that these positions will remain in place for multiple years.

The Archbold-UF LTAR Research Assistant will collect data in support of LTAR activities.

General Tasks:
Responsible for collection and processing of plant, soil, and greenhouse gas samples
Responsible for plant aboveground and belowground biomass data collection on a monthly schedule
Responsible for drying, sorting (live and dead biomass), and weighing biomass and entering data into excel spreadsheets in an organized manner.
Responsible for assisting with plant diversity and composition data within different grazing land types
Prepares samples and documentation for shipping samples and ships to the analytical laboratory
Responsible for assisting and/or performing laboratory analysis of soil, plant, and gas samples
Maintains excellent records of all activities and data files

Performs other reasonable duties in cooperation with the LTAR Research Scientists, as needed. It is expected that the research assistant will be able to perform most tasks independently as needed after initial training in tasks has been acquired. The research assistant will be willing to collect data in the field, drive field trucks between data collection sites, organize data into required formats, assist with fire and cattle management, and perform all task in a highly professional manner. Travel between the cooperating sites is expected.

Minimum Requirements:
A bachelor degree in soil science, agronomy, agroecology, or equivalent.
A valid driver license
Willingness to work long hours in the field in sub-tropical Florida environment

The first project is for alumni and new graduates. We are seeking Roaming Utility Foresters who are available to travel throughout California for a period of 3-6 months of project work (minimum commitment of 2 months required). Compensation will start at $20/Hr and additional benefits will include guaranteed Over-Time(50 Hr Weeks), hotel and subsistence per diem 7 days per week, compensated flights.

Our other project is perfect for current students who are seeking an internship experience. It is a 3 Month Summer Forestry Internship Program in Lexington, KY. This project involves identifying hazardous trees that can cause damage to the utility infrastructure there. This position will also have the additional benefit of hotel and per diems being provided.

OPS Summer job - SWS Department

The Sustainable Nutrient Systems Lab in Soil & Water Sciences Department is looking for two undergraduate OPS workers for this summer.  Please ask interested students to get into contact with Dr. Rao Mylavarapu (raom@ufl.edu) as soon as possible. Temporary OPS position in nutrient and water management (Gainesville campus)

A full-time temporary OPS position is available at the University of Florida (Gainesville campus)
to study the effects of nutrient and water management in organic mixed vegetable production
systems. This OPS position will be split between the Sustainable Nutrient Management Systems
Lab (Dr. Maltais-Landry) in the Soil and Water Sciences Department and the Urban Water
Resources lab (Dr. Eban Bean) in the Agricultural & Biological Engineering Department.

This position will combine field research conducted at the UF Plant Science Research and
Education Unit (Citra) with field trials conducted on growers’ fields located in Alachua County.
This work will mainly focus on carbon and nutrient cycling in crops and soils, soil health, and
water management. The OPS will work in close collaboration with a postdoctoral research
associate and assist with field and lab work, in addition to data compilation and analysis.

Responsibilities:
• Assist with the implementation of field experiments at Citra and on growers’ fields;
• Conduct sample collection for soil, crop and water;
• Process experimental samples in the laboratory;
• Collect data and maintain field equipment;
• Compile data prior to interpretation and analysis.

Minimum qualifications:
• BS in biology, soil science, agricultural sciences (e.g., Agronomy, Horticulture) or related
engineering field (e.g., Agricultural, Biological, Ecological) at the beginning of employment;
• Prior experience in field and/or lab work in soil, crop and/or water sciences;
• Capacity to compile data using Microsoft Excel;
• Punctuality, attention to detail and capacity to work in hot and humid conditions;
• Must have a valid US driver’s license;
• Availability to work from May 2021 to December 2021.

Preferred qualifications: Prior experience in both field and lab work; capacity to conduct
preliminary data analysis in R; availability to work in this position until December 2022.

Advertised salary: $13/h to $15/h depending on experience
