The Department of Defense's X-Force program is now accepting applications for technologists and entrepreneurs to serve their country by solving real-world national security problems in collaboration with the U.S. military. Interested individuals may apply now through December 31, 2020.

X-Force participants will engage with Department of Defense (DoD) partners for three months of applied problem solving. Participants will work on problems sponsored by their DoD hosts potentially including:

  • Research (e.g. emerging technology scouting) projects

Participants will be expected to deliver a prototype capability to their military sponsors by the end of the program.

The full-time X-Force Fellows will be paid a stipend of around $2,500 per month and have a small budget for travel, materials, and other expenses related to the delivery of a product to their sponsor.

Want to learn the basics of Artificial Intelligence? Register now!

We are pleased to announce a new, introductory, 1-hour course for Spring 2021, Frontiers of Artificial Intelligence (EGN 1935, section FOAI, class number 31730). In this course, you will learn what artificial intelligence (AI) is (from a high-level, conceptual standpoint) and how it is used to solve real-world problems in a wide variety of disciplines. This course will give you a broad overview of how AI technologies are transforming science, art, medicine, business, and more, and it will equip you to think about how AI might be applied to your own areas of interest. This course is intended for students from any major/discipline, and you do not need to have previous AI or technical expertise. Most class sessions will feature guest lectures from top AI researchers at UF who apply AI in their field. Class will meet online during 7th period on Tuesdays, from 1:55 PM to 2:45 PM. Study abroad in Cuba!

The application is open for UF in Cuba: Tropical Marine and Island Ecology (FAS4932/6932 - Summer A 2021). Its an amazing experience that combines learning about tropical marine and terrestrial ecology with the backdrop of AMAZING people and places! You will be fully immersed in the history, culture, ecology, and flavor of Cuba! We’ll travel from the big city of Havana to small villages, historic towns, remote mountains, and pristine seas.

The attached flyer and brochure give you the basic information and costs. We are finalizing the details of the itinerary and budget now, but it will be ~ $3,000 for the program (includes 4 credits, all accommodations, coach bus transportation, boat trips, entry fees, and meals - except for 2 dinners). Its really quite a deal considering all that we do over the two week course!

Deadline 12/1/20 - Farm Foundation Round Table Cultivator Program - Apply now!

The CALS Dean’s Office is seeking students who may be interested in participating in the Farm Foundation Round Table Cultivator Program.

A program of Farm Foundation, the Round Table is an invitational group of 150 food and agricultural leaders and their guests who meet semi-annually to discuss issues of importance to agribusiness, the food system and rural communities. The sessions are intended to provide ideas and learning experiences that participants may use in their own activities.

The program for the January meeting will focus on The Future for Animal Agriculture and take place virtually on January 13-15. The University of Florida College of Agricultural and Life Sciences can nominate one student to participate. Up to six students from an accredited North American college or university will be selected by the Farm Foundation to participate.

Students selected for the Cultivator program will receive an honorarium for full participation in the event. 

Participation requirements include:
  • logging in and attending each virtual Round Table session (with working webcam and audio capabilities);
  • actively engaging with Round Table participants via the conference platform, chat, live participation opportunities, and/or other means; and
  • making a 5-8 minute presentation on an animal agriculture research topic during the meeting.
Students who participate in all conference activities will receive a $500 honorarium to be paid after the conference.

A Round Table participant will be assigned as a host/mentor for each Cultivator (student). Mentors will reach out to the students before the event to let them know what to expect, etc. During the meeting, mentors will ensure that the Cultivators meet other Round Table participants, students, speakers and guests.

The primary goal of the Space Life Sciences Training Program (SLSTP) is to train the next generation of scientists and engineers, enabling NASA to meet future research and development challenges in the space life sciences. SLSTP provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research and discover exciting careers in Space Biology at NASA’s Ames Research Center located in Silicon Valley, California. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 SLSTP was held virtually, and the 2021 program will be held remotely as well. Interns are paired with a mentor for individual research projects in areas such as molecular, cell, organismal or synthetic biology, bioinformatics or bioengineering.  In addition, the cohort of interns designs and executes a group project.

The SLSTP is an equal opportunity program. Admission is by competitive application process. Past student participants were selected for their outstanding merit, passion for space, and desire to study space life science. Applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • be a US citizen*
  • be in high academic standing (GPA of 3.2 or greater)
  • have a minimum age of 18
  • be a junior or senior undergraduate student next Fall
    -- or --
    a senior graduating in 202
    1 and entering graduate school Fall 2021.
  • have a passion for space and a desire to study space life science

*Citizens of US territories Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Northern Marianas are U.S. citizens. Permanent Resident foreign nationals, Legal Resident Aliens, Work Permit holders, and Illegal Immigrants are not eligible.

The SLSTP Intern Program application deadline is January 4, 2021.  The 10-week program begins on June 7, 2021 and ends August 13, 2021. Interns accepted into the program receive a stipend. Financial support is also provided to interns who submit an accepted abstract as first author to the annual meeting of the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research.

McNair Scholars are launching the 3rd Annual iDigTRIO Biological Sciences Conference to be held virtually on February 11-13, 2021. Created in 2019, iDigTRIO is a national conference connecting first-generation, limited-income, and/or underrepresented students to information about careers and graduate school research opportunities in the biological sciences.

The DOE Scholars Program introduces students and recent college graduates to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) mission and operations.

Why should I apply?
Being selected as a DOE Scholar offers the following benefits:
Stipends starting at $600 per week for undergraduates and $650 per week for graduate students and post graduates during the internship period
Limited travel reimbursement to/from assigned location
Direct exposure to and participation in projects and activities in DOE mission-relevant research areas
Identification of career goals and opportunities
Development of professional networks with leading scientists and subject matter experts

Eligibility
Be a U.S. citizen

DC Gator Club Scholarship

Fall 2020 - Currently-enrolled students at the University of Florida who are interning for an organization based in the DMV area (whether or not they are participating virtually), for credit or non-credit, at all levels of enrolled student (undergraduate and graduate) are invited to apply for the DC Gators Internship Scholarship. There will be a voluntary area where the applicant can communicate financial need if they wish.

If a student is not enrolled in classes and not interning for credit, the tuition scholarship would apply to their next eligible semester.

Scholarship applications will be reviewed by the D.C. Gator Club Scholarship Committee and one recipient will be selected for the $1,500 scholarship. AFTER SUBMITTING THIS FORM, send your unofficial transcript to scholarships@dcgators.com.

NRCS Summer Intern position-apply by 10/21

NRCS is seeking a summer engineering intern to be located in Palmetto.

Responsibilities:
  • Performs a variety of survey work to develop topographic, cross section, profile, and other types of duty for use by a professional engineer.
  • Operates and is trained in the operation of engineering instruments such as an engineer's level, hand level, laser level, total station, data collector, and GPS.
  • Operates a personal computer to process data, organize data, type design reports, estimate costs, calculate material quantities, and perform simple hydrology and hydraulic calculations
  • Assists with construction inspection and layout for conservation structures for adherence to plans and specifications.
  • Assists technicians in evaluating the needs and feasibility of proposed conservation projects.
  • Student Trainees will perform the following duties under direct supervision. Assignments will be developmental in nature and will assist the employee in gaining the competencies necessary for a career.

Bilingual Support Group at the CWC

The UF Counseling and Wellness Center (CWC) is starting up ¿Cómo Estás? — an counseling group for UF students who are bilingual and/or native Spanish speakers. 

Its aim is to promote connection and support in the Spanish language amid these times of physical distance and pandemic precautions. 

The group will meet online on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
