O4U Engineering Conference for LGBTQ+ Undergrads - Extended CALL for Applications

Black lives matter beyond their relationship with the police and police brutality. Black lives matter in all disciplines and all walks of life. For too long, engineering has employed only white, heterosexual and cisgender men, closed to the diversity of people in our world. As a result, we see that the only innovations brought forth to society are those drawn from their experiences; from seatbelts that fail to protect non-men to racist algorithms which punish and ignore people for the color of their skin, the engineering world must change before it can best serve all people.

In every way, Out for Undergrad exists to drive this change. While we cannot improve the world by ourselves, we can uplift the people who can. O4U has a strong history of bringing underrepresented and underserved students together. Today, our commitment to supporting our students, especially Black LGBTQ+ students disproportionately affected by our white supremacist police state, remains as strong as ever.

Out for Undergrad (O4U) recognizes that students, faculty, and staff have been juggling a lot this year. Many students reached out to us after our final application round to express that they were interested in our conference, but missed the application deadline. To better reach and support the LGBTQ+ students in your community, O4U wants to give them one last chance to apply to attend our Fall 2020 Engineering conference.

Our engineering conference team has been hard at work developing a world-class digital event this fall. Although we may not be able to gather in person, we are excited to virtually convene a group of bright LGBTQ+ students and mentors for professional and personal development, and we would love to see your students included in that group! This conference is a fantastic opportunity to meet and network with employers from a variety of different companies such as the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Clorox, Medtronic, Toyota, and many more.

Internships - Moss and Associates - Solar Projects

Students...interested in the Solar Industry? A former AOM graduate interned for Moss & Associates constructing a solar power plant in North Florida. With no formal experience/education in the construction industry outside of related topics from LEED Lab, this was a great foot-in-the-door experience and led to full-time employment as a Project Engineer (entry level project management position). The company's solar division is rapidly growing with many new projects starting up in Florida and across the United States ranging up to 300MW. 

Moss is looking for interns interested in both the operations side (project management route) and the field side (superintendent route) of solar projects for this fall (still a few spots left to fill), and both Spring and Summer of 2021. If are you are interested in developing a career in construction management/utility-scale solar, please connect them with Dylan. He will be happy to answer any questions and pass on resumes.

L3Harris Technologies Mentorship Program

This mentorship program with SWE pairs up mentors and mentees each semester who are able to meet at least once every month to talk about career readiness related topics. This 1:1 relationship and insightful sharing from professionals who shared similar education background or interests are very valuable to our students’ learning of industry and questions regarding how to better prepare for next step.

This coming fall, we are expanding the offer to all interested HWCOE students. The enrollment is open now.

On Aug 6th, from 5 PM to 6 PM, we will host an info session to provide more details of this program. Please share with your students as appropriate. The registration is available from here.

The Location Compliance Manager will report to the General Manager.

Food Safety Duties:
 Organize and participate in a minimum of 2 mock recalls per year.
 Organize and submit quarterly desk audits
 Daily paperwork organization and filing
 Weekly paperwork review (to be sent to Area Compliance Manager each week)
 SQF program training
 Weekly plant walk-through (notes/photos sent to ACM and discussed with local management)
 Maintain location food safety and food quality programs, registers, and corresponding materials (i.e. organizational charts, procedures, Letter of Guarantee, Certificates of Insurance, etc.)
 Perform quality checks on nest run eggs and/or finished product
 Over-see completion of all CARs and supporting documentation to be submitted to ACM.
 SQF Practitioner Certificate and HACCP training
 Completing Complaint Investigation Forms and logging all customer complaints
 Assist GM with annual verification and validation
 Undergo training and achieve certification to be a Certified Food Manager (FL locations only)

Salmonella Prevention/FDA Compliance Duties:
 Maintain SE Prevention Plan
 Organize and oversee timely collection of drag swabs
 Ensure proper filing/spreadsheet entries of SE test results and NPIP’s for all flocks
 Weekly SE Plan paperwork organization and review
 Product area inspections to insure compliance with program

Animal Welfare Duties:
 Maintain Animal Husbandry/UEP Plan
 Regular review of UEP paperwork/flock books
 Ensure all required training is completed on company employees and contract service crews

Safety Duties:
 Coordinate/conduct safety training (may be delegated to managers/supervisors)
 Coordinate all reports for corporate (send to Area Compliance Manager for
review and submission)
 Monthly walk-through of plant, pullet houses, layers houses, and truck shop
(whichever may be applicable) – Internal Safety Audit
 Maintenance of OSHA logs (injuries and illnesses)
 Accident investigations and reporting (under supervision of ACM)
 Maintenance of MSDS books
 Complete Monthly Safety Summary and submit to Jackson
 Creating/maintaining site specific safety programs
 Submitting Tier II filing information to ACM each year for submission to the state

Emergency Response Commission

Environmental Duties:
 Awareness and understanding of all permits and reporting requirements (i.e.
public water systems, diesel storage tanks, wastewater monitoring well sampling)
 Maintaining copies of all current permits and placards
 Ensure proper testing has performed in accordance with permit requirements
 Ensure all reports are filed with the corresponding agency in a timely manner
(actual filing of the reports may be handled by GM or ACM)

Virtual Student Federal Service Program - Internships Offered

If you are looking for an intern program this will be a great experience for your resume from the State Department. Some of these opportunities are very interesting and are being hosted virtually in the Southern Region.

All about VSFS
Are you a student looking for a way to make a real difference in the work of your government, while also gaining job experience and connections?

Through the Virtual Student Federal Service (VSFS) program, students can work on projects that advance the work of government on multiple fronts. Projects include helping counter violent extremism, strengthening human rights monitoring, developing virtual programs, engaging in digital communications, mapping, economic and political reporting, data analysis, graphic design, and app building.

No more nine to five
VSFS is accommodating and flexible. Through VSFS, students can intern from wherever they are – from dorm rooms to libraries to coffee shops, or anywhere in the world with a broadband or Internet connection. Students set their own schedules too – working on projects on a timetable that fits their life.

Through VSFS, students can also choose projects from a wide variety of agencies – more than 40 federal agencies. Through VSFS, federal employees connect with students from diverse backgrounds and skills, as well as with their colleagues across government.

How it works
Each year, federal employees submit project requests between May 1 and June 10. U.S. students apply to their top three VSFS projects from July 1-31 on USAJOBS.gov. VSFS supervisors review applications between August 1-31 and may contact VSFS candidates for a virtual interview. As part of the interview, candidates may be asked to show examples of their expertise and work. All candidates will hear by early September if they have been offered a position.

Selected eInterns work on their projects for ten hours a week from September through May. Some eInterns work their academic institutions to receive course credit for their VSFS participation.

PhD Opportunity - Nanomaterials

Dr. Andreia Faria’s research group seeks a Ph.D. student to study the bioactivity of nanomaterials and their application as antimicrobial coatings using. Such antimicrobial coatings can be applied in many fields, such as medicine, food industry, and engineering systems, to prevent bacterial attachment and biofilm formation. Dr. Faria’s lab is located at the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The candidate must demonstrate interest or have previous experience working with nanomaterials. Background, theoretical or practical, in microbiology is preferred but not mandatory. The candidate must be available to begin activities in Spring or Fall, 2021.

By joining Dr. Faria’s research group, the student will benefit from a well-established and competitive graduate program in Environmental Engineering in the US. In addition, the student will have access to a vibrant and young research environment, where the candidate will have many opportunities to collaborate and learn new methods and techniques. On the personal side, Gainesville is a diverse city with many international communities, good restaurants, and excellent outdoor activities.

Requirements:
  • Hold a bachelor or MSc. Degree in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, agricultural sciences, material engineering or material science, biology, or related sciences.
  • Be or hold American citizenship.
  • Two letters of recommendation
