Barnes and Noble Maker Faire

This November, we are thrilled to host our second annual Mini Maker Faire (MMF) on Saturday, 11/5, and Sunday, 11/6.

The Mini Maker Faire at Barnes & Noble brings together tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, engineers, science club members, students, entrepreneurs, hobbyists and Makers of all kinds to learn from each other, get craft ideas and science fair project ideas, hear the experts, and work on projects. Join us and be a part of the second annual Barnes & Noble Mini Maker Faire in partnership with Maker Media, the creators of Make: Magazine and Maker Faire. We are looking for individuals/ school groups who could demonstrate during this event as well. Forest High school EMIT Program is coming in on Sat to help demonstrate and build products, as well as host a Maker Bookfair for their program. Texas A&M Study Abroad for ABE students

Biological and Agricultural Engineering students are invited to participate in the Belgium Environmental Science and Engineering Study Abroad program offered by the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department at Texas A&M University. Attached is a tri-fold brochure and flyer with information about the Belgium Study Abroad program and a letter to non-Texas A&M students with details about how to apply and costs for the program.

The Belgium Program is offered annually during the 2nd summer session and this year the dates are July 5 to August 11, 2017. Students take two, three hour engineering classes, BAEN 460 (Principles of Environmental Hydrology) and BAEN 465 (Design of Biological Waste Treatment Systems). Students not from Texas A&M sign-up for equivalent classes in their home department. Attached are the syllabi for BAEN 460 and 465 to aid in determining equivalent classes. Also attached is the course schedule from the 2016 program to provide additional information about the field trips and seminar speakers on the program.

Hydrologist/Engineer - SW Fla Water Mgmt District

The Southwest Florida Water Management District, is seeking a Hydrogeologist or Groundwater Engineer in support of the Water Resources Bureau. Professional-level technical, scientific, and administrative work using an understanding of natural and physical science in areas such as engineering, hydrology, and/or geology. Conceptualize and construct numerical models; compile, analyze and evaluate required data; calibrate models and conduct sensitivity analysis; and construct predictive simulations.

Summarize and interpret data, develop related recommendations, and perform statistical analysis of hydrologic data. Understand the underlying governing equations and boundary conditions upon which various models are based, and can identify different types of hydrologic and environmental system models and their applicability. Has the ability to analyze model output; lead and respond to external peer reviews, and make recommendations regarding alternatives evaluated to solve complex water management issues. Prepare and present evaluation results both orally and in writing to a variety of audiences including Executive staff and policy makers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Hydrology, or Geology
• Two (2) years of related work experience
• Valid driver's license

Preferred
• Strong statistical background
• Working knowledge of hydrogeologic and groundwater flow principles
• Working knowledge of groundwater flow models
• Ability to use and manipulate large data sets
• Ability to use R, SAS, and other statistical platforms
• Master's or Ph.D.

Intern position - SW Fla Water Management District

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District), a leader in water resource management, is seeking a Student Intern for the Water Resources Bureau. The District offers the Student Internship Program to provide students with real work experience and specific hands-on knowledge related to the chosen course of study. This Student Internship Position will primarily support the Resource Evaluation Section but is also expected to provide some assistance to the Engineering and Water Supply sections by performing tasks for project managers, engineers, and management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Work with the Water Resources Bureau to:

• Perform hydrogeologic, biologic, and administrative tasks for Project Managers and Hydrogeologists, Engineers, and Biologists related to the Minimum Flows and Levels program.
• Perform field work to evaluate lake and wetland health and collect elevation data for hydrologic indicators.
• Assist the Resource Evaluation Section with its Knowledge Management Initiative.
• Assist the Water Supply and Engineering Sections on project and program tasks.

Student positions will be assigned to work no more than 25 hours per week. These positions are not eligible for insured benefits. Position will be for a term of four to six months.

NAVAL RESEARCH ENTERPRISE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (NREIP)

Last year NREIP provided an opportunity for students to participate in research at a designated Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer. Stipend levels are determined by the amount of credit hours possessed and range from $5,400 to $10,800. Level 1 ($5,400): 31 - 60 credit hours. Level 2 ($8,100): 61 or greater credit hours. Level 3 ($10,800) with proof of enrollment in graduate school. Lodging is at the expense of the selectee. Applications are done on line and can include recommendation letters as well.

The Diane Fisher Scholarship

UFIC has established a scholarship to be given to two undergraduate international students for outstanding service.
 
This scholarship will be given in honor of Diane Fisher who passed away in October 2003. Diane Fisher, a Document Preparation Specialist was an employee of UF for 15 years. She worked closely with departments and students to ensure proper and timely processing of student documents. She was an individual who always gave more than was required of her. UFIC honors her memory of dedication by establishing the annual Diane Fisher Scholarship to international students who show exemplary service to UF and/or the Gainesville community. We are pleased to announce we will be presenting two scholarships this year of $500.00 each.
 
The nominees should meet the following criteria:
  • Currently enrolled full-time in a Bachelors program
  • Holds at least a 3.0 G.P.A.
  • Exhibits outstanding service/contributions to their department/UF or broader community
  • A non-immigrant F-1/J-1 student visa holder in good standing
Upon meeting the above criteria you may nominate yourself or another student by submitting the following:
  • An essay of 500-800 words answering the questions: What have you done in UF and Gainesville and how have these experiences enhance your degree? How has helping others at UF and in Gainesville influenced your UF experience?
  • Submit 3 letters of references from sources, other than family or friends, supportinginformation in the essay.
A selection committee appointed by the University of Florida International Center will choose and rank the submitted nominees. This award will be presented at the International Student Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, November 15th, 2016. Invitations will be given to recipients with details about the ceremony in early November. Food & Resource Economics 1-year non-thesis Master of Agribusiness

The Food and Resource Economics Department is recruiting outstanding students for its one-year Master of Agribusiness program. The program, which begins in Summer B 2017 and ends Summer C 2018, is specifically designed for students from non-economic and non-business backgrounds, and blends business and economics with the applied science of agriculture, providing methods for solving real-world problems. It also includes a summer internship in which students have the opportunity to put to use the skills learned in the program. The MAB provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in a changing and complex agricultural economy. Our graduates get good jobs that lead to great careers!

Based off the information provided on the form, you will be sent a customized list of service opportunities. This list will include all of the information you need to start serving!

After receiving your customized list, your Service Connector will follow up with you to see if you have any questions or in the event you need to schedule an appointment for additional assistance. Your Service Connector will also provide you with helpful tips while contacting sites and while in service. We want to ensure you have a positive service experience that meets your needs!

2017 Cuba Infrastructure Scholarship Competition

The Association of Cuban American Engineers (ACAE) and the Cuban-American Association of Civil Engineers (C-AACE) are glad to announce the 2017 Cuba Infrastructure Scholarship Competition!

It gives us great pleasure to invite all engineering students to participate in this year’s scholarship competition. Participants will get the chance to win a scholarship of up to $6,000 and the opportunity to network with engineering professionals from both public and private industry sectors. The Cuba Infrastructure Scholarship Competition entails that university student teams formulate and present a project of their choice on Cuba’s public infrastructure that relates to the engineering field in transportation, water resources, power/telecommunications, healthcare or agriculture.

Please note that the deadline for submitting a letter of interest to the CISC Committee is Friday September 30, 2016. ABE Department Scholarship - Application Deadline is October 15th!

Several scholarships are available to undergraduate students in the BE and AOM majors. Deadline to apply for a Spring 2017 scholarship is October 15, 2016.

2) Diversity Meet Up: Pre Showcase Connections- September 26th 5:00-8:00 pm, Reitz Union Grand Ballroom. This pre Career Showcase diversity networking mixer is specifically designed to connect students of color, students with visible and non- visible disabilities, veterans, women in the STEM and Business fields and students who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community directly with employers. There will be a networking tips and strategies workshop in the Career Resource Center prior to the Diversity Networking Mixer that will begin at 6PM. Students can complete the RSVP for the event in 3 simple steps!
