New Course! ALS 4914 Project Team - AOM Elective option!

ALS 4914, Section 3E84
3 Credits
Project Team Research: Building Skills in Agrobiology
Protecting Biodiversity in our Food System

Monday Period 8, Wednesday Periods 8-9

Instructor: Anna Prizzia, Director, Field & Fork Campus Food Program
352-294-2208; aprizzia@ufl.edu
Industry Partner: Working Food

Gain hands-on experience solving real problems faced by agricultural industries and organizations! Students will work with the Field and Fork Program, the Center for Stress Resilient Agriculture, and Working Food to explore how new, open-pollinated kale varieties thrive in the uniquely challenging environmental conditions in Florida.

Working in interdisciplinary teams, students will design, implement, evaluate, and present results for a trial of genetically diverse kale varieties. Students will grow the kale varieties at the Field and Fork Farm, and will engage with the community through exploring consumer preference and marketability for these varieties with farmers, gardeners, and local food consumers at farmers markets.

Applied problem-solving is critical for employment preparation, competitive standing, and network building. Luckily, many industries are seeking opportunities to interact with students in a direct way, as they work to fill the many current and upcoming openings, and navigate the changing employment skills needed as agriculture continues to increase in complexity.

Questions about course content should be directed to the instructor: Dr. Anna Prizzia aprizzia@ufl.edu.

Registration is not department-controlled. If you have difficulty with registration, then contact Cynthia Hight chight@ufl.edu.

Spring 2019 course - AEC3065/6932

During the spring semester, students will have the opportunity to learn skills and methods to effectively communicate agricultural and life sciences issues to policymakers. This special section of AEC 3065: Issues in Agricultural and Life Sciences (and will be co-taught as a graduate student course) will help students equip themselves with the tools needed to communicate with policymakers and influencers. Students will spend a day in Tallahassee prior to the start of the 2019 legislative session to meet with agricultural lobbyists, state agencies and departments, and policymakers. From March 2-6 (during UF’s spring break), students will travel to Washington, DC to meet with policymakers, lobbyists from national agricultural organizations, and agency heads.

Dr. Lisa Lundy has created a narrated PowerPoint presentation to answer questions you may have: https://ufl.voicethread.com/share/11547927/ I’ve also attached a DRAFT SYLLABUS of the course.

If you have an interest in policy, lobbying, or political office, this is one class you won’t want to miss. More details are provided on the AEC website: https://aec.ifas.ufl.edu/undergraduate/study-abroad/.

If you are an off-campus student, we are considering holding our Friday morning sessions via Zoom so that you can take the course. Since the course is one of the ones that is departmentally controlled, you will need to contact BECKY TRAMMELL if you are interested in the course. We can accommodate only 20 students total, so please let her know as soon as possible if you want her to register you for the course when pre-registration opens.
