Disney's Agricultural Sciences Internships are Open!

The Agricultural Sciences team is looking for undergraduate college students and recent graduates who have received their Bachelors degree within 6 months of our internships’ start dates to participate in our fun and challenging six-month hands-on internship in several different agricultural and science education fields including Plant Science, Entomology, Biotechnology, Aquaculture. We are currently looking for students to fill internships for the Fall 2014 term (June 2014 – January 2015). 

The Agricultural Sciences Professional Internship Program is designed to provide qualified college students with the opportunity for hands-on work experience in the unique growing areas that are part of Living with The Land, an agricultural attraction at Epcot®.

Responsibilities:
In addition to maintaining the show quality of our growing areas, aquaculture systems or biotechnology lab, interns will spend a significant amount of time leading informative and interactive guest tours through our facilities along with promoting and selling these tours. Additional training sessions, classes and meetings will be scheduled throughout the semester. Other duties vary by discipline:

Aquaculture:
Operate a recirculating freshwater aquaculture facility. Monitor filtration systems and water quality, assist in diagnosis and control of disease, and raise fish to marketable size for Walt Disney World® restaurants.

Biotechnology:
Maintain a tissue culture production facility. Prepare media and culture a wide variety of plants. Then, collect, package and deliver the tissue-cultured plants to Epcot® merchandise locations.

Plant Science:
Maintain a high-quality show of hydroponically-grown food crops from around the globe. Seed, transplant, irrigate and prune plants; harvest produce for Epcot® restaurants; rake, sweep, and provide general cleanup of greenhouses.

Travel Awards for Undergrads

The University of Florida has travel awards of $500.00 for UF undergrad researchers who have been accepted to present at a national meeting? Any UF undergrad who has been accepted to present at a professional meeting is eligible to apply for this award.

The $500 travel stipend offered by the University Scholars Program may be used to cover travel-related expenses for presenting research or other scholarly work at a professional conference.

Seeking PhD student at MPI

The International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles is seeking a highly-motivated and collaborative PhD student with a background and interest in both, environmental and quantitative/computational sciences (e.g. geo-ecology, environmental science, biogeochemistry, biology, applied mathematics, physics, or computer science), experience or interest in field measurements (ideally with the eddy covariance technique), and interest in applying this expertise to broad questions on terrestrial ecology and global change research.

The successful candidate will be involved primarily in a field experiment aimed at understanding the interactions between nutrient, water availability and carbon fluxes.

The position will be at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (Jena, Germany) in the Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions and Experimentation Group, Biogeochemical Integration Department (http://www.bgc-jena.mpg.de/bgi/index.php/Main/HomePage).

The PhD Student will join an international team in a vibrant research environment. The successful applicant will be also encouraged to apply for admission to the International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles. Summer REU at Northwestern University

The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Northwestern University offers a 9-week, paid summer research experience for undergraduates. The students are paired up with some of the leading research professors in science and engineering fields. Research areas include nanocomposites, photonics, nanoparticles, molecular electronics, and biomatierals. While there are many REU programs, the NU-MRSEC stands out in offering students a truly interdisciplinary research experience. Students currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in science or engineering who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible. The program dates for summer 2014 will be June 23 through August 22; applications are due Feb. 15, 2014. Background Qualifications:
  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Pursuing bachelor’s degree or graduate with a bachelor’s degree in an agriculture field
  • At least four (4) verifiable years’ experience in operating heavy equipment including family farm or past farm job references.

ISIS Belize offers a variety of conservation and environmental field courses


The Institute for Sustainable International Studies, ISIS Belize, offers a variety of conservation and environmental field courses in Belize, Central America, during the summer and winter breaks. The courses are held in the field, forests, sea and waterways of this incredible tropical country. Students will be able to experience and understand first-hand the wonders and challenges of different environments. All courses are intensive, delivering 3 credit hours over two weeks. Students can pair another course for a full four weeks studying abroad.

The courses offer students a chance to explore the rich cultural, social and environmental resources in the tropical, English-speaking setting of Belize. The ISIS field courses below are linked to our website, for schedules and syllabi:

A two week course is $2,675 and the two course session is $4,225*, during June and July, 2014. These courses are also offered during a shorter winter session over the winter break, December 26, 2014– January 7, 2015. Blueberry Farm Ag Manager - Frogmore Ranch

Frogmore Ranch, a 407 acre tract, that is on the Brooksville Ridge in Pasco County near Dade City and has some of the highest land elevation in the state is starting a commercial blueberry growing operation. The position of Ag Manager is being created to help manage the phased process of getting Frogmore into the Blueberry business.

Position Reports to: Frogmore Ranch Managing Member

Responsibilities & Duties: Oversee the operations, coordination and supervision of field operations throughout the year, including but not limited to, land prep, fumigation, planting, cultivating, irrigating, pest scouting, pesticide applications, fertilization, bush setting, and weed and animal control; fence maintenance; and mowing between rows and installing and maintaining appropriate ground cover on all sloped surfaces.

Oversee and provide input into land analysis, crop rotation, crop yields, land preparation, planting, irrigation, fertilizer and spray programs, weed and disease control, crop growth over time and all requirements that fall into pre, post and harvest execution. Provide input in the budget process, and monitor and execute tasks within the parameters of the budget.

Requirements:
  • Five (5) years work experience, including supervisory experience is desired, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted that provides the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Qualified Applicators License is desired or must be willing to obtain one within 1 – 2 years

Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and skill in providing consultation on fertilizer and chemical applications in the small fruit industry.
  • Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques and the ability to apply such.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are required to work with and supervise contractors and employees with a wide range of skills sets, educational levels and personalities.
  • Ability to maintain accurate, detailed computerized records of field activities, employee timesheets, maintenance and usage records, financial information capture and other required documentation.
  • Preventative maintenance system creation and maintenance of both rolling stock and fixed mechanical and water systems.

Education: Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in agricultural studies

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Applications due 1/15

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MlEF), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy, is a 10-week summer internship program that provides opportunities to students who are pursuing degrees in science, technology (IT), engineering, or mathematics (STEM majors). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for minority and female students in these fields, but all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. Candidates who are selected will have the opportunity to participate in focused research projects consistent with the mission of the Office of Fossil Energy.

During the 10 weeks, students will be appointed at one of several locations including national laboratories. At the conclusion of the internship, students will attend a "Technical Forum" where they will present their research project and tour technical sites located nearby. The MlEF program allows students to gain valuable experience in DOE/FE mission-related research programs, and offers an "inside view" of federal employment which encourages students to consider future opportunities within the Department of Energy.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the program, students must:
. Be 18 years of age;
. Be a citizen of the United States;
. Be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university (sophomore year or higher); and
. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

A Paid Internship Opportunity

Students will be paid:
. A weekly stipend of $600 for undergraduate students;
. A weekly stipend of $750 for Master's students;
·A weekly stipend of $850 for Doctoral and Post-Doctoral students;
. Approved housing allowance based on appointment location;
. Approved travel costs to and from the host site; and
. Approved travel costs to the Technical Forum for presentations and awards.
