The Agriculture Future of America student leaders have selected the theme “Soar: Reach New Heights” for the 2017 AFA Leaders Conference.
This year’s event will be Nov. 2-5 in Kansas City, Missouri. College students are selected to attend this 4-Track Conference program through a competitive application process.
Industry sponsorship applications are now open to students pursuing careers in agriculture and food. Sponsorship covers program registration, curriculum materials, lodging and meals. Travel is not included. Applications for Tracks 1-3 are due Sept. 11. To learn more about Conference, or to access the application, visit www.agfuture.org/conference.
Student application eligibility requirements:
Recommended 3.0 GPA or higher
Undergraduate student status
Age 17-25
Attending a four-year institution or articulate plans to obtain a four-year degree
Possess a passion for agriculture

This year, AFA will select 800 students from across the nation to attend Conference. Delegates gain valuable experience and relationships through opportunities to network with each other and industry professionals. Conference boasts a 3:1 student to industry professional ratio. The AFA Opportunity Fair, held in conjunction with Conference, allows students to explore internship, job, study abroad and graduate school opportunities.

This is a mid-level position (3-5 years) however, candidates can come straight from school if they have solid internship experience. This candidate must have a BS in packaging or some kind of packaging degree. This person will be responsible for designing packaging for the clients consumer products using the program ArtiosCAD. They will also be responsible for gathering design specs from various suppliers and vendors.

- Develop standardized packaging types/sizes prior to releasing the parts in MDM / MRP.
- Update and maintain IT systems with correct packing information.
- Keep track of changes in packaging, reasons for the change and support the improvements.
- Communicate the process to stakeholders and set the standards.
- Work with other departments such as Production, Quality and Engineering to identify and correct items that have packaging issues.
- Work to find MOQ (Minimum Order Quantities) or Prepack quantities, which are suitable for Operations requirements.

- Reduction in Scrap and Damage,
- Image improvement.
- Develop IT System/Tool requirements to support packaging and MDM as required.

- Advise Buyers, Purchasers and Sourcing Engineers whose suppliers are not conforming to compliance or legal requirements.

Herdsman-Blackwater Cattle Company
Blackwater Cattle Company is located near Lake Park, GA just east of I-75, straddling the Georgia-Florida line.
The open position is for Herdsman. This position will work directly under the supervision of the ranch manager and will be expected to assist in multiple areas of the operation to include: Bull and Heifer Development, Calving Season, Hay production, Synchronization protocols for Embryo Transfer and Artificial Insemination, and routine vaccinations of the cow herd.
Job Responsibilities
· Daily observation of cow herd
· Active in routine cow work: vaccinations, synchronization, etc.
· Management of creep and mineral feeders
· Record-keeping
· Feeding cow herd
· Assist bull manager with bull development protocols
· Cattle and Facility preparations for annual bull and female sales
· Tagging and weighing newborn calves
· Fence maintenance, repair, and construction
Job Requirements
· Must be able to work independently and as a team
· Must be willing to work long hours if needed to complete a task
· Weekend work will be required in rotation with other employees
· Must have good communication and organizational skills
· Degree in Animal Science preferred
· AI certification is preferred
· BQA certification is preferred
